What is Infection Control?
Treatment of patient infections comprises a significant percentage of the operational costs of any hospital. Many patients are admitted with infections or diseases that make them susceptible to infection. Infection control is the discipline associated with preventing nosocomial or healthcare-associated infection. It is an essential part of the infrastructure of a healthcare organization. Infection Con- trol refers to policies and procedures used to minimize the risk of spreading infections.
What are some ways BMH is working on preventing HAI’s?
Our building is designed to lower the risk of Hospital acquired infections. Semi private rooms help to minimize risk of infection because patients and visitors do not share space. Efficient high-quality air and water systems keep the air and water clean. We adhere to strict hospital cleaning procedures that also help to risk the transfer of infections between patients and staff. We also monitor and implement hand hygiene techniques to make sure that hospital staff are not spreading infection. We have hand sanitizer strategically located throughout the hospital as well as antibacterial soap near every sink. All of these things contribute to a safer, cleaner patient environment.
Because infections significantly add to the costs of the hospital and overall costs of medical care, it is important to lower costs by ensuring a low infection rate (Van Enk, 2006).
Blue Mountain Hospital has been successful with its infection control program. We can report that our current Hospital Acquired Infection rate is at <1%
