Director of Pharmacy chosen for BMH
Shane Gurley, PharmD, recently joined the Blue Mountain Hospital team as the Director of Pharmacy and he’s excited about the opportunity to take on a new challenge.
A native of Payson, Utah, Shane graduated from Payson High School in 2000 and then accepted a scholarship from Utah Valley State College (now UVU) in Architectural Woodworking. After receiving his 2-year degree from UVSC, he served a two-year mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Cleveland, Ohio.
After his mission, Shane decided that, although he loves woodworking, there might not be much of a career in Architectural Woodworking. So, he returned to college and earned a degree in Biology with a minor in Chemistry. After college, he followed in his grandfather’s footsteps and, in 2009, went to work for the Division of Wildlife Resources – aquatic section. He noted that his grandfather worked with the DWR for 37 years. Shane worked in the DWR’s Springville Hatchery for five years.
In 2014, he decided to pursue another career, and at the suggestion of his wife, started looking into possible professional careers, in which his Biology and Chemistry background would be of use. Finally, he decided on a career in pharmacy and was accepted to Manchester University Fort Wayne, Indiana. He attended Manchester University from August 2014 until May 2018. During his final year he did several clinical rotations, including one at Parkview LaGrange Hospital, a small, rural, 25-bed hospital. After graduating with his Doctor of Pharmacy degree, he went to work at Parkview LaGrange, until he was offered a position at Sunrise Medical Center & Children’s Hospital, in Las Vegas, Nevada. After six months in Las Vegas, Shane accepted his position with Blue Mountain Hospital.
Shane explained that he will manage pharmacy needs for BMH inpatients, during normal business hours. This includes, medication manage- ment and consultation, supply and other duties.
Shane and his wife Mindy have three children, two boys, ages 12 and 9, and a girl 7. Mindy, who grew up in West Valley, Utah, worked in healthcare for sixteen years, before Shane went to PharmD School. She used the time, while Shane was in school, to attend Nurse Practitioner school. She graduated just before Shane in 2018.
Shane and Mindy just celebrated their thirteenth wedding anniversary. Shane said his family will fit in well in Blanding because they’ve wanted to move to a small town. He said the family would rather go camping than visit a large city and they love all outdoor activities, like fishing, camping, hunting, hiking and dirt bike riding. Shane Gurley is a welcome addition to the BMH family and he’ll be a great asset to the hospital. We’re glad to have him with us.
